Know Your Sport : MotorSports 

Welcome to the exciting world of motorsports ! 

Internationally motorsports is divided into two broad categories

1) Two and three wheelers

2) 4 Wheeler’s and above 

The two and three Wheeler Motorsports is governed by an International Federation namely Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM – more details @www.fim-live.com) headquartered in Geneva Switzerland while the four Wheeler and above motorsports is governed by an International Federation namely Federation Internationale de la Automobile (FIA – more details @www.fia.com) headquartered in Paris France.

Both these international federations recognize one national sports federation per country as their representative. This national sports federation is responsible for the promotion and the governance of Motor Sports in that country. In India, both the International Federations recognize The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) as their national sporting federation for the promotion and governance of motor sports in India.

The FMSCI is a not to profit organization registered under the company’s act and is headquartered in Chennai Tamil Nadu India.

The organizational structure of the FMSCI is as follows:

General body

Councilors

President

Vice President

Sub Committees

Secretariat

In every two years the general body of the FMSCI elects a minimum of eight and a maximum of 10 councilors from the eligible member clubs. The general body also elects from these councilors a president and a vice president. The Council also appoints various Sub Committees, both Sporting and Technical for various disciplines of motorsports. These experts will have to study and give their recommendations for the promotion of their discipline concerned to the council for their final approval. All rules and regulations are generally prepared by these experts along with the technical commission for technical regulations and are approved by the council. The last election was held in the month of September 2024 and the following were elected as councilors.

2) Mr. Farooq Ahmed from Motorsports Club of Chikmagalur, Chikmagalur

3) Mr. Vicky Chandhok from Madras Motor Sports Club, Chennai

4) Mr. J Prithiviraj from Coimbatore Auto Sports Club, Coimbatore

5) Mr. Farokh Commissariat from Indian Automotive Racing Club, Mumbai

6) Mr. Gautam Shantappa from Karnataka Motor Sports Club, Bengaluru

7) Mr. Vir Rina from Calcutta Motor Sports Club, Kolkata

8) Mr. Saurav Chatterjee from Kolkata Automotive Sports Association, Kolkata

9) Mr. Tamal Ghosal from Just Sportz Management Pvt Ltd. Kolkata and

10) Mr. Raj Kapoor from Northern Motorsports, Noida

The General Body also elected

Mr. Arindam Ghosh as the President and

Mr. Farooq Ahmed as the Vice President of the FMSCI.

Finally it is the FMCI Secretariat which handles the day to day functioning of the FMSCI which consists of

Mr.P. Narendran – Executive Secretary – In charge of Events

Ms.Razia Sultana & Mr.John Chittaranjan – In charge of Licences

Mr.Sivaguru & Ms. Sudha Swaminathan – In Charge of Accounts

Mr.Anil Kumar – Technical Coordinator (Works from Coimbatore)

While the rules and regulations are prepared by the FMSCI And the sporting and technical officials are appointed by the FMSCI to ensure safe, fair and orderly conduct of motor sporting events, the actual motor sporting events are held by the members / non members of the FMSCI. The list of various members affiliated to the FMSCI can be seen from the FMCI website www.fmsci.co.In.

Now that you have the basic idea of how motorsports are handled Internationally as well as in India let us now understand how to enter this exciting world of motor sports.

To start with

1) Identify if you would like to enter this exciting sport in a two Wheeler or in 4 Wheeler category.

2) That was the easy part. Now comes a tricky part of which discipline you like in the two Wheeler or the four Wheeler.

There are various types/disciplines of two Wheeler and four Wheeler Motorsports.

In India the following disciplines of two Wheeler and four Wheeler Motorsports are conducted:

2 Wheeler :

(i) Circuit Racing

(ii) Stage Rallying

(iii) Drag Racing

(iv) Supercross

(v) Dirt Track

(vi) Hill Climb

4 Wheeler :

(i) Karting

(ii) Circuit Racing

(iii) Stage Rallying

(iv) Drag Racing

(v) Autocross

(vi) Hill Climb

(vii) TSD Rally
